General Information
SD Cards ( Secure Digital cards ) are the most popular type of flash memory for cameras PDA’s, MP3 players and many other devices.
SD Card capacities range from 16mb to *GB, with 1/2Gb being the most popular. If the device has been designed for SD cards you can also use MMC. Note: All the cards marked with are *Performance Verified* click the Partno or Image for the More Info Popup / Page. The figures are like for like comparisons, we can't guarantee this performance for any device / operation. We hope you can use the information to make * The Informed Choice * amongst the vast array of cards available and the speeds claimed be it none 20/40/80/120/133x etc. We welcome your feedback / comments / input. Please note the new SD V2 or SDHC (High capacity) cards can only be used in devices designed for them. They are designed higher capacities ie 4-32Gb and have defined minimum write speeds as in 2/4/6 Mb/s (Class 2/4/6) to ensure they will work with more demanding devices. They are 4Gb Non SDHC SD cards for which the device must support FAT 32. We understand they there can be problems if such a card is used in a SDHC device and then transferred to a non SDHC device. |
JTF - Just The Facts
The vast SD card market is dominated by Samsung and Toshiba, whatever brand you buy its very likely to be one or the other or have eithers memory chips.. It’s very much a volume product and very price sensitive, unfortunately with such products quality can suffer. We have seen more compatibility problems with SD cards than anything else. The formatted capacity ranges from 940Mb to 988Mb, never seen one that was a GB but it all depends how you want to count your Mb’s. The performance of SD cards is generally poor, read speeds tend to be OK but write speeds aren’t very good.
Recommended - The Informed Choice
If you are using a PDA or MP3 player where you are reading more than writing a standard SD card should be OK, on a camera where you are writing most especially mini videos you want a card with faster write speeds, ie, Hi-Speed, Ultra etc. If you have got a decent camera, it’s a false economy not to make the most of it with a faster card, it will only cost a few pounds more. Currently the TIC would be either Transcend 80x or Kingston Elite.
